Detail of North Africa from the so-called ‘Catalan Atlas’
This map is from a facsimile edition of the so-called ‘Catalan Atlas’ – the original atlas is held in the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris. The work is generally attributed to the Catalan ‘school’ of Jewish map- and chart-makers based on Mallorca in the early 14th century which included the mapmaker Cresques Abraham. This lithographic copy comes from an atlas of reproductions collated by the Vicomte de Santarem a Portuguese emigrant in Paris.
